After a mis-step in last year's Eurovision Song Contest, Georgia is back
in the game with "Waterfall" by Nodi Tatishvili & Sophie Gelovani.
Though a little overwrought, could peculiar voting patterns in this
year's Contest bring Georgia to new heights?
Country: Georgia
Title: "Waterfall"
Artist: Nodi Tatishvili & Sophie Gelovani
Semi-Final: Second, Position 15
Last year's entry/position: "I'm a Joker" - Anri Jokhadze (DNQ, 14th of 18, Second SF)
Georgia drew the obligatory duet card for this year's Eurovision Song
Contest with the lovely yet over-the-top "Waterfall" by Nodi Tatishvili
& Sophie Gelovani. On the one hand, it is a major recovery from last
year's entry "I'm a Joker" but may be a little too similar to 2011's
Contest winner "Running Scared" from Azerbaijan. Take a listen:
True duets tend to do well at Eurovision, so this is a smart entry to
get Georgia back on track for appearing in the Final. Though this is
only the sixth time the country has competed, last year did break a
perfect streak of appearances. Also, "Waterfall" will be produced by
Thomas G:son, who composed last year's Contest winner "Euphoria." The
elements are there for Georiga to get to the next level of competition.
The question is, can Georgia win with this entry? With the Contest being held in Sweden and the top favorites hailing from Denmark and Norway,
there could be potential vote-splitting as well as a desire to have the
Contest migrate that could allow for other countries to have a
surprisingly strong showing. However, the next set of favorites are from
Russia and Ukraine, which doesn't exactly help Georgia in terms of regionalism, though the other two countries have won in the past 10 years.
The other factor which may work in Georgia's favor is that of the new wave of contenders. Netherlands and San Marino
are making significant waves, which Georgia may be able ride to a new
best finish. If you are in a Eurovision pool this year, I would
recommend keeping Georgia on your shortlist.
